Introducing the Spyderco UpTern: Upgraded Performance, Classic Design

Back in 2004, Spyderco launched the popular byrd line of knives, providing a budget-friendly alternative to their premium products. Drawing inspiration from their best-selling Spyderco models, they crafted the Cara Cara from the Endura, the Meadowlark from the Delica, and the Robin from the Dragonfly. But sometimes, the design inspiration flows the opposite way, and that's where the Spyderco UpTern comes in.

As its name subtly implies, the UpTern is an enhanced version of the Tern—a byrd model initially introduced in 2012. Designed by Spyderco co-founder Sal Glesser, the Tern was the first and only non-locking byrd model. It followed the spirit of Spyderco's groundbreaking UK Penknife, complying with restrictive knife laws in the United Kingdom that prohibited carrying one-hand-opening knives with locking blades. The UK Penknife combined the CLIPIT concept with a non-locking blade, giving birth to the SLIPIT—a pocketknife with a notched-joint mechanism that securely held the blade open without a mechanical lock, offering the convenience of a pocket clip and one-handed opening through Spyderco's signature Trademark Round Hole.

The Tern introduced the SLIPIT concept to the byrd line, providing a compact, easy-to-carry pocketknife with a full-flat-ground 8Cr13MoV stainless steel blade, textured G-10 scales, and a reversible deep-pocket wire clip for tip-up carry. Swift, ambidextrous, one-handed opening remained intact through byrd's Comet-Shaped Hole.

Although not the most popular byrd folder, the Tern gained a devoted customer following due to its convenient size and classic Spyderco design lines. Recognizing its appeal and the mind behind its design—Sal Glesser—an "upgraded" version, the Spyderco UpTern, made perfect sense.

The UpTern maintains the stylish lines and synergy of convenience, cutting performance, and style as its predecessor, now proudly a part of the spyderco's Value Folder family. It retains its profile while upgrading the G-10 handle scales to stout, all-stainless-steel construction. The stainless handle boasts riveted construction, a beautifully sanded spine, and a handsome satin finish. It also incorporates a sturdy back lock mechanism for secure blade lock during use and a fully configurable four-position hourglass clip for versatile carry options.

Like other members of the Value Folder family, the UpTern's blade is crafted from reliable 8Cr13MoV stainless steel. Full-flat ground for exceptional edge geometry, it proudly showcases a fully accessible Trademark Round Hole for positive, ambidextrous, one-handed opening. The inclusion of a 50/50 index-finger choil and thumb ramp with matching jimping enhances dexterity and control, allowing a "choked-up" grip.
